Duties and responsibilities: Shadow an experienced South African Sign Language Interpreter to gain exposure to educational interpreting.
Attend South African Sign Language Interpreter meetings on campus to get on board with terminology and the role of educational South African Sign Language Interpreters.
Enter into a mentorship agreement with an advanced educational South African Sign Language Interpreter.
Meet with a mentor on a weekly/biweekly basis to discuss questions regarding shadowing.
Work in a team with an advanced South African Sign Language Interpreter after shadowing.
Participate in quality control of the South African Sign Language Interpreter service.
Attend terminology development workshops to gain exposure to how terminology is developed.
Vocabulary collection and terminology development.
Inherent requirements: An Advanced Diploma / Bachelor's degree on NQF Level 7 in South African Sign Language or a Bachelors degree on NQF Level 7 with South African Sign Language as a module up to 3rd-year level (attach academic record).
Three (3) years of conversational South African Sign Language experience.
Recommendations Honours/Postgraduate Diploma on NQF Level 8 in South African Sign Language (SASL).
Basic understanding of SASL interpreting/ interpreting environment.
Working understanding of Deaf culture.
Working understanding of the interpreters code of ethics.
The following criteria apply to the selection of candidates: The applicant should not currently be participating in an existing learnership/internship programme.
The applicant should not have any previous formal work experience.
The applicant must be willing to sign a learnership/internship agreement with UFS.
The applicant must be available for the period of 1 year to participate in the learnership/internship.
