As the Head Guide at our exclusive 5-star lodge in the renowned Sabi Sands Game Reserve, you will be responsible for managing the safari operations, ensuring guests enjoy world-class wildlife experiences. You will oversee the ranger and guiding teams, manage logistics for game drives, bush walks, and other safari activities, and ensure that all activities are conducted to the highest safety and environmental standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Safari Operations Management:
Oversee the daily safari operations, including the coordination of game drives, bush walks, and other wilderness activities.
Ensure safari vehicles, equipment, and facilities are well-maintained and ready for use.
Plan and manage game viewing activities to ensure optimal wildlife sightings while maintaining a balance with environmental preservation.
Develop unique safari experiences to exceed guest expectations, ensuring high levels of guest satisfaction.
Ensure that all activities comply with the lodge's policies, Sabi Sands Game Reserve regulations, and wildlife conservation guidelines.
Guiding Team Leadership:
Manage, train, and mentor a team of rangers, trackers, and field guides to deliver exceptional safari experiences.
Conduct regular performance reviews and provide feedback and guidance to ensure the guiding team maintains high standards of professionalism and guest service.
Organize ongoing training in areas such as wildlife knowledge, guest interaction, and safety protocols.
Manage staff rosters and scheduling to ensure optimal coverage and availability for guest activities.
Guest Experience:
Engage with guests to understand their preferences and ensure that all safari activities are personalized to meet their expectations.
Deliver pre-drive briefings, post-drive debriefings, and ensure that guests are informed about the daily safari agenda.
Respond promptly to any guest feedback or concerns, resolving issues and enhancing the guest experience.
Assist with the coordination of special requests such as photographic safaris, private game drives, or cultural experiences.
Wildlife and Environmental Stewardship:
Ensure all activities are conducted with respect to wildlife and nature conservation practices.
Work closely with the reserve management and local conservation teams to align safari operations with environmental sustainability goals.
Educate both staff and guests about local ecosystems, conservation efforts, and the importance of preserving the natural environment.
Administration and Logistics:
Maintain accurate records of safari activities, vehicle usage, fuel consumption, and maintenance schedules.
Manage the safari budget, ensuring cost-effectiveness while maintaining high standards.
Collaborate with other lodge departments, including housekeeping, food and beverage, and guest relations, to ensure a seamless guest experience.
Ensure that all permits, licenses, and insurance related to safari operations are up to date.
Health and Safety:
Implement and enforce health and safety protocols during all safari activities, including proper handling of wildlife encounters.
Ensure all safari staff are trained in first aid and emergency procedures.
Conduct risk assessments regularly and address any potential safety issues promptly.
Qualifications:
FGASA Level 2 or higher (Field Guides Association of Southern Africa) or equivalent.
Valid Professional Driving Permit (PDP).
Extensive experience in guiding and managing safari operations, preferably in a 5-star lodge environment.
Strong knowledge of wildlife, bushcraft, and ecosystems, with a passion for conservation.
Proven leadership skills with the ability to manage, motivate, and develop a guiding team.
First Aid certification.
Proficient in spoken and written English; knowledge of other languages (local or foreign) is advantageous.
Excellent guest interaction skills with a focus on providing luxury experiences.
