Environmental Specialist

The role of the environmental specialist will be to manage environmental permits, licenses and authorisation processes and develop and manage an environmental extended producer responsibility scheme for the project. The successful candidate will monitor and report on a project's environmental and social aspects and conduct onsite environmental audits and inspections for development projects.

Position of the job in the organisation:
The successful candidate will report directly to the Lead Environmental Specialist.

Principal responsibilities:

Conduct high-level screenings on potential solar PV projects to determine possible legal requirements.
Develop request for proposal documentation to be shared with Environmental Assessment Practitioners (EAP) and other specialists.
Work with EAPs and other specialists to obtain environmental permits, licenses and authorisations for C&I projects, where applicable.
Assist in the development and implementation of environmental and social performance trackers.
Assist in the development/Implementation or review of environmental and social management frameworks with associated policies and procedures.
Environmental contractor management includes a review of their policies, procedures, standard operating procedures, enforcement of legal requirements and reporting on their compliance.
Conduct site inspections on projects to evaluate compliance with company policies and procedures and where applicable EAs and EMPs.
Work with project teams and guide meaningful engagements with EPCs, installers and other stakeholders.
Obtain information from Contractors on environmental and social performance and compile monitoring reports that can be shared with investors and other key role players.
Undertake environmental awareness training with internal and external stakeholders on environmental compliance requirements.

PERSON DESCRIPTION
Experience:

4+ years of experience in a similar role.
Degree in environmental science, development or management.
Knowledge of South African Environmental Legislation and IFC PS and EHS Guidelines.
Onsite environmental contractor management and compliance enforcement.
Solar PV experience.
Computer literacy (MS Suite).
Valid driver's license and willingness to travel.


Specific attributes:

Experience in ESIAs and EMPR development.
Experience in implementing environmental law.
Environmental management system experience.

By month 3:

I will be familiar with our company software, including but not limited to Slack, MS Office, SharePoint, and Monday.com.
I will be familiar with the Projects Team and my role within the team.
I will know the Extended Producer Responsibility Scheme requirements and have started engagements with various role players to get this off the ground.
I will have reviewed and understood all the processes and procedures associated with the solar PV Projects.
I will have commenced reviews of all contractor management requirements.
I will have participated in monthly 1:1s and my quarterly review.
I have visited 2 C & I sites and met key role players. Environmental screening criteria has been understood and screenings are being undertaken.


By month 6:

I have mastered what is required on the C & I projects and can function with only the support of my manager.
The development of the extended producer responsibility project is well underway, and waste suppliers have been identified and are at the contracting stage; rates have been determined, and the structure and plan for implementation are ready.
Reporting and inspection templates have been finalised for C & I projects and offices, and five inspections have been undertaken.

By month 12:

The EPR scheme has been implemented and is progressing.
Project compliance inspections are flowing, risks are managed, and inspection findings are closed.
All additional specialist work in terms of the action list compiled.
Environmental screenings are being undertaken, and risks are being managed.
