Education, Qualifications and Experience
- Grade 12 or equivalent NQF Level 4 and Registration with SANC as an Enrolled Nurse essential
- Minimum one year extensive experience in a Medical Ward will be advantageous.
- Enrolled as an Enrolled Nurse with the SANC.
- Compliance with the SANC code for an Enrolled Nurse and all appropriate health care legislation.
- Mental and physical health sufficient to meet the demands of the position.
- Ability to implement and maintain standards of health Sound knowledge of general nursing theory and practice
- Knowledge of modern nursing care principles and practices
- Appropriately balancing these various pressures to maintain stable performance.
- Must have the emotional intelligence to understand people and recognise their care needs.
- Must have a high attention to detail and enjoy being organized.
- Able to collaborative relationships to help accomplish work goal.
Responsibilities
Patient Assessment and Monitoring:
- By assisting with activities of daily living, administering medications, and providing health education, Enrolled Nurses contribute to the management of acute and chronic health conditions, thereby improving patient outcomes and quality of life.
- Promotion of patient overall health and wellbeing by working effectively and co-operatively with others to establish and maintain good working relationships that are mutually beneficial, being effective in communication with patients' regarding their care, maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
Action area:
- Assessment of patients basic needs for: Hygiene and physical comfort. Promotion of exercise, rest and sleep. Need for early ambulation. Feeding and elimination.
- Planning: Carrying out of the nursing care plan as planned under supervision of the shift leader
- Implementation: Administering oral, intra-muscular parental medications under supervision of the Registered Nurse. Attend to wound care. Observation of intravenous lines in co-ordination with the Registered nurse. Preparation and receiving patients from theatre, immediate post-operative care. Admission and discharge of patients. Ensure patient comfort at all times. Attending to their hygiene needs, e.g. assisted baths, bed bath, etc. Assisting with baby baths. Initial baby bath with midwife. Assist with preparation for diagnostic procedures. Takes rounds with doctors. Vital signs observation. Neurological observation.

Effective Care Coordination and Collaboration:
- Collaborate closely with registered nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement individualized care plans tailored to each patient's needs and goals.
- By participating in interdisciplinary team meetings, case conferences, and care coordination efforts, Enrolled Nurses facilitate seamless communication, continuity of care, and efficient resource utilization, resulting in improved patient outcomes and healthcare delivery efficiency.
Patient Safety and Risk Reduction:
- Through their attention to detail, adherence to established protocols, and vigilant monitoring of patient conditions, Enrolled Nurses help ensure a safe and secure healthcare environment for patients, staff, and visitors.
- By promptly identifying and reporting changes in patient status, medication errors, or safety hazards, Enrolled Nurses contribute to the prevention of adverse events, medical errors, and healthcare-associated infections, thereby enhancing patient safety and minimizing risk.
- Equipment and supplies: Records any surgical stock items used on billing sheets of patients. Prevents waste and assists in preventing theft. Knows the correct use of equipment. Cares for and cleans equipment according to prescribed procedures. Reports equipment needing repair or replacement to sister-in-charge
- Emergency / Disaster Plan: Attend training and practice to keep up to date with the hospital evacuation and disaster plan.
- Medical – legal and safety aspects: Always practices within own scope, skills and level of training for care givers. Prevents risks as far as possible. Maintains a safe working environment in accordance with the Occupational and Safety Act
- Reports unsafe conditions
Care Planning and Implementation:
- Ensure that key areas of organisation and planning are kept up to date with regards to: Ensure all stock is well controlled and managed, file compilation, therapeutic, clean and safe environment that is free from medico-legal hazards. medical waste management principles and all other waste management principles are maintained, ensure that all documentation is maintained timeously and accurately, reflecting patient care maintain professional conduct and standards at all times in accordance with hospital policies and procedures, report equipment needing repair or replacement to sister-in-charge and responsible for ensuring correct use, cleaning and storage of equipment.
- Action area: Execution of the nursing care plan as directly or indirectly supervised by the Registered Nurse. General Patient Care. Admit patients under direct or indirect supervision of registered nurse. Intake and output. Promotion and maintenance of patient's nutritional status and elimination. Check intravenous infusions. Record results accurately (keep intake and output charts up to date). Prepare patient for diagnostic and nursing procedures. Administer injections and oral medicines under the direct or indirect supervision of a Registered Nurse. Promotes healing of wounds by wound care and prevention of infection or other complications. Assist the Registered Nurse with her responsibilities/nursing duties as indicated and delegated necessary.

- Be knowledgeable about the governing body of the nursing profession, aims and objectives and regulations regulating the nurse's scope of practice and misconduct
Positive Impact on Patient Experience:
- Sub nurses play a critical role in maintaining patient satisfaction and experience by delivering competent, compassionate, and patient-centered care during staffing transitions or challenging circumstances.
- They build rapport with patients, establish trust, and address patient needs with empathy and sensitivity, leaving a positive impression on patients and families.
- Work with and supervise nursing assistants, Basic Ambulance Assistants and health care workers to ensure best practice nursing standards are followed. Refer all complaints from patients and doctors to sister-in-charge of the unit.
ICU/ High care enrolled nurse functions:
- Enrolled nurse responsible for patients delegated to her care under indirect supervision by shift leader. Performs full physical assessment on patient e.g. inspection, auscultation and palpitation. Records accurately all findings on patient's notes. Reports any abnormalities to shift leader/sister in charge. Administers medication to patient after checking prescription and medication with a registered nurse. Both staff sign prescription chart.
- Accompany doctor on rounds with patients delegated to her care, documents all orders in ICU chart and communicate it to the nurse in charge.
- Ensure all doctor's orders are executed as soon as possible.
- Ensures that telephonic orders are signed within 24 hours.
- Responsible for environmental checking and safety checks allocated to her daily.
- Record and report abnormalities of medical equipment.
- Reads and signs the memorandums, communication book, minutes of meetings and policies and procedures.
- Ensure all patients delegated to her have authorization forms filled in by attending doctor.
- Ensure that patient's details are entered into admission register on admission/discharge/transfer from unit.
- Ensure that medication is reconciled and tallied with each shift leader; consider pharmacy issue and usage to ensure correct medication balance.
- Missing medication/drugs are reported to nurse in charge.
- Ensure safe environment for the patient promotes and maintains patient's personal hygiene (Does bed making, bathing of patients).
- Preparation prior to invasive procedures and assisting doctor during procedures as needed/indicated.
- Assist with admission and transfer of patients to and from the ward and handover take a full report.
- Assess risk factors and prevent medico-legal hazards.
