A luxuary five-star international hotel in Cape Town is seeking a Director of Finance to work closely with the General Manager, adhering to established procedures and departmental standards. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining exceptional service levels and operational efficiency across all areas of responsibility, implementing robust control procedures in hotel operations and accounting, and leading the Financial Team to achieve business objectives. Additionally, the role involves fostering strong relationships with both the company owners and the Global Office.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Manage the financial operations of the hotel across all departments.
Handle requests from both the Global Office and the Owners.
Set up procedures for purchasing, capital expenditure, annual budgets, and forecasts.
Implement new IT systems to improve efficiency and meet reporting needs.
Create IT files to save time and increase efficiency.
Oversee payroll, ensuring proper control of costs, and manage monthly payroll preparation.
Be proficient in IT systems, including Property Management Systems (PMS), Point of Sale (POS), and accounting software.
Prepare month-end reports for the Global Office and Owners.
Ensure all control procedures for inventory, purchasing, and payables are followed, reporting any issues immediately.
Oversee the purchase ledger and ensure all procedures are followed.
Supervise payables and cheque preparation.
Assist employees with any tasks related to your areas of responsibility.
Lead regular stock counts for the Food & Beverage, Housekeeping, and other departments.
Ensure inventory counts align with accounting records.
Conduct quarterly stock checks for all hotel operating equipment.
Ensure the accounting system matches the hotel's revenue and statistics.
Prepare accurate reconciliations of all balance sheet accounts each month.
Work with the Executive Committee, Sales Director, and General Manager to set budgets and forecasts.
Prepare monthly revenue reports for management and the Global Office.
Maintain an up-to-date fixed asset registry.
Collect and prepare statistical data for the General Manager.
Reconcile all bank accounts each month and conduct monthly cash counts.
Ensure income auditing procedures are followed.
Oversee weekly cash flow projections.
Collaborate with the General Manager on financial operations and maintain good relations with Owners and Management.
General Accounting Functions
Ensure timely delivery of month-end accounting packages.
Maintain financial controls and adapt them as the business grows.
Control operating costs across all departments while maintaining standards.
Ensure that the hotel's accounting policies and procedures are respected.
Make sure all accounting entries follow the Uniform System of Accounts or guidelines from Global Office.
Oversee revenue and expenses in all departments under your supervision with proper controls and auditing.
Skills, Experience & Educational Requirements
Strong skills in numeracy, literacy, and using Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
Knowledge of accounting software and Micros POS system (Opera/Fidelio experience is a plus).
Advanced computer skills, including MS Macros, networking, and servers (knowledge of Hyperion is desirable).
At least 5 years of accounting experience, with prior experience at a director/managerial level in a luxuary hotel.
Proven leadership and ability to coach and develop a team of accounting professionals.
Familiarity with hotel operating systems and software.
Excellent administrative, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Strong computer literacy is essential.
Education or Certification
A professional accounting designation or relevant university degree with a specialization in Accounting is preferred.
Alternatively, enrolment in a recognized accounting program with progress to 3rd or 4th level is ideal.
