Location South Africa (can be based at any of our sites - KZN, Western Cape or Centurion)
Position Overview As the Director of Platform Engineering, the incumbent is responsible for overseeing the functioning of an organization's systems and infrastructure. They are in charge of setting goals and guidelines, managing budgets and timelines, conducting evaluations to ensure the efficiency of all systems and procedures, performing research and analysis to determine the strengths and weaknesses of existing systems, and implementing solutions against problem areas. The Platform Engineering Director ensures that hardware and/or software are designed and installed in a manner that meets the needs of the organization.
Primary Responsibilities This role will:
Lead a global team of server engineering professionals, nurturing a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Provide coaching, guidance, and support to team members, ensuring their professional development goals can be achieved. Develop and implement a comprehensive technical strategy,roadmap and standards for server engineering and hosting, aligning with the organization's overall objectives and industry best practices. Oversees and participates in the design, development, maintenance, and enhancement of our Windows and Linux environments. Recommends investments to management based on results of assessment of current and future performance, stability, and systems management/life cycle issues. Maintains documentation for all aspects of the environment and the supporting systems used for its management. Manage expenses to budget and always focus on optimizing the portfolio for streamlined operation Lead automation efforts wherever possible to constantly look for efficiencies for cloud engineering, application engineering and quality engineering Monitor and report on key performance indicators and metrics for the system engineering and hosting operations, making adjustments and improvements as needed thus ensuring that all systems meet performance standards and that production support services are consistent with service level agreements. Drive vulnerability management, risk management, secure hosting, data protection practices, and ensuring all platforms are configured for optimal protection. Works in conjunction with other IT managers and key business contracts for system issues, planning, and development. Performs other related duties as assigned. Supervisory Responsibilities Yes, people manager with HR responsibility for direct reports.
Minimum Qualifications Preferred candidatewill have:
Bachelor's Degree with twelve years of equivalent work experience. Seven years of experience managing systems engineers within an enterprise environment. Demonstrated experience managing and supporting teams with Windows and/or Linux server architectures at enterprise scale. Experience managing server environments using industry standard technologies including computer management, software updates, vulnerability remediation, clustering and high availability, application installations and environment monitoring. Passionate about delivering exceptional client experience and tier three support. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, at the executive level Able to work independently in a fast-paced environment with ability to change priorities on the fly. Adheres to department and IT protocols, procedures and service level agreements. Strong documentation, diagnostic and root cause analysis skills. Requirements and General Skills Delivery experience working within the ITIL Framework for Incident, Problem, Change, or Service Request Management. Superior writing and communication skills, including the ability to interact with other teams with confidence. Ability to work independently and in a team environment. Mentor team and help other team members to bring them up-to-the speed. Experience assessing and re-engineering technology solutions and operational procedures, developing policy recommendations. Strong organizational skills and attention to details. Excellent time management skills, with the ability to prioritize and multi-task, and work under shifting deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Ready to work late night, weekends and participates in on call as well as ensure that a team on call roster is followed. Previous experience in managing a team is preferred.
