VACANCY: DIRECTOR FOR MASIFUNDISE DEVELOPMENT TRUST (MDT)We invite applications for the position of Director at MDT Background:
Masifundise is a civil society organization, registered as an independent Trust, with a strong history in the small-scale fishing sector. Its programs focus on mobilising and organising small-scale fishing communities to promote Food Sovereignty in South Africa and globally. The aim is to empower fishers and community activists to drive change, secure their rights, and promote social, economic, and environmental justice.
Between 2004 and 2012, in alliance with Coastal Links (CLSA), Masifundise campaigned for the legal recognition of small-scale fishers in the Marine Living Resources Act (MLRA). This effort led to the adoption of the Small-scale Fishers Policy (SSFP) in 2012, with implementation concluded in 2023.
From 2020, Masifundise recognised the need to develop different strategies and tactics to support social, economic, and environmental justice for fishers and other working people in coastal and inland fishing communities. The upcoming Fishers Peoples Tribunal (August 2024) and Fishers Conference (October 2024) will inform the new strategies. We are looking to appoint a Director to lead these processes.
The following describes the requirements for the position of Director.
Key performance areas: Vision and experience in implementation of strategic organisational direction within progressive civil society organisations over an extended periodFinancial Management and fundraising experience and capabilityAttainment of public profile relating to justice for fishers and others in coastal and inland fishing communities locally, nationally, and internationallyDemocratic and collaborative work environment.Excellent managerial and leadership qualitiesGood people management and conflict management skillsSound interpersonal relations.
Knowledge of Food Sovereignty, Climate, Social, and Environmental Justice.Minimum requirements:
Extensive experience and proven competence in civil society leadership and management.
Competency in English, as well in either IsiXhosa, IsiZulu or Afrikaans is preferred.
Evidence of expertise, in relevant national and international networks.
A demonstrated capacity for fundraising and evidence in generating grants.
The position is in Cape Town, South Africa, and South African labour laws will apply.
