The core mandate of a university is located within its academic and research enterprises. At UWC the academic project is managed through seven (7) faculties, as well as a range of Centres, Schools, Institutes and Departments linked to the various faculties and the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Academic.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Academic position is responsible for the academic project in Faculties headed by Deans and supported by Deputy Deans, as well as the Directorates, namely Academic Planning Unit, Community Engagement Unit, Centre for Innovative Educations and Communication Technologies (CIECT), and the Directorate of Learning and Teaching for Student Success.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Academic reports to the Rector and Vice-Chancellor and as a member of the University Executive shares in the responsibility to drive the institution's strategic direction in line with the Institutional Operating Plan and effective governance.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Academic is a distinguished leader with extensive experience in higher education who: fosters and supports strategic cross-institutional collaboration, learning and teaching activities, as well as Scholarship of Engagement for Societal Impact activities; supports and initiates activities in support of the academic development, retention and success of a diverse student body; leads discussions and initiatives in curriculum renewal; will encourage and promote the generation of external income through academic activities; will establish national and international partnering and networks through collaboration; facilitates and delivers on the goals as set out in the University's Institutional Operating Plan; contributes to the transformational agenda of the University in all areas of responsibility and leads the University's academic agenda by being responsive to the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
The applicant must hold a Doctoral degree and be eligible to be appointed at a Professor level, as well as a proven track record of academic excellence, and a well-established publication track record; proven management, leadership and change management skills gained at a senior level in the higher education environment; evidence of international and national partnering relations; experience in managing budgets, projects, funding and grants; demonstrable knowledge in systemic operational matters and governance in Higher Education, as well as challenges faced by universities in South Africa and internationally. Demonstrated experience in fundraising external to the university environment is essential. The applicant must display a good understanding of the integration of various forms of technology into the delivery of programmes and services.
