POST TITLE: CONTROL TECHNICAL ASSISTANT
PEROMNES POST LEVEL 8

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The incumbent will be responsible for:
The Tissue Culture and Veterinary Pharmaceutical Analytical Laboratories;
Providing extensive technical support in cell culture techniques and immuno-assays (e.g. ELISA);
Applying the basic principles of an ISO 17025 quality system;
Assisting postgraduate students undertaking routine cell cultures and pharmaceutical analysis in the Section of Pharmacology, Toxicology and Phytomedicine;
Assisting in facility administration and maintenance; and
The maintenance of equipment and storage of chemicals.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
A National Diploma and 5 years' experience or B-Tech degree and 3 years' experience in veterinary technology;
Registration with the South African Veterinary Council as Veterinary Technologist; and
Knowledge of tissue culture and/or phytomedicine and/or cell cultures and/or ELISA, HPLC and GC-MS analysis.
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
Ability to work independently and have the initiative and ability to develop and optimise new ELISA methods and cell culture techniques;
Knowledge and understanding of ISO 17025 accreditation;
Skilled in the use of MS Windows, MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint; and
Appropriate language and communication skills.
ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:
A postgraduate qualification, such as an MTech degree in veterinary technology or related field;
At least twelve years' experience in a veterinary pharmacology/toxicology laboratory directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified; and
Experience in implementing the principles and standard operating procedures that encompass ISO 17025 accreditation.
PLEASE NOTE: All shortlisted candidates may be required to participate in relevant skills assessments as part of the selection process.
The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
