Consultant, Workplace Investigations & Human ResourcesDate Posted: 11/27/2024Req ID: 40867Faculty/Division: VP-People Strategy, Equity & CultureDepartment: People Strategy, Equity & CultureCampus: St. George (Downtown Toronto)Description:Under the general direction of the Assistant Director, Workplace Investigations and working closely with the Executive Director, CAHRS & Workplace Investigations and with a tri-campus mandate, the Consultant, Workplace Investigations & Human Resources coordinates workplace investigations across the University of Toronto. The incumbent manages and responds to cases involving workplace complaints and/or incidents of bullying, harassment, discrimination, and sexual harassment. Operating under the University policy and Ontario legal frameworks, the incumbent provides advice to the University's divisional human resources offices and senior leadership on these issues. The incumbent delivers a range of supports to stakeholders, from basic consultation on best practice through to case management of complex, multi-party complaints requiring a third party investigator.The Consultant, Workplace Investigations & Human Resources is familiar with the Occupational Health & Safety Act, the Ontario Human Rights Code, and all University of Toronto Workplace Policies (Human Resources Guideline on Civil Conduct, the Guideline for Employees on Concerns and Complaints Regarding Prohibited Discrimination and Discriminatory Harassment, the University of Toronto Workplace Violence Program, the Sexual Violence and Sexual Harassment policy, etc.). The incumbent maintains an up-to-date awareness of provincial and federal law as it relates to the University as a workplace for staff, students, and faculty.Working in collaboration with a broad range of offices both internal and external to the University, the Consultant participates in the development and implementation of ongoing educational programs and training initiatives related to workplace conduct and workplace investigations for all University staff.Secondary responsibilities include:Advising University client groups on employment-related laws and jurisprudence including the Human Rights Code, the Employment Standards Act, etc.;Providing general advice and guidance on traditional HR functions (including recruitment, job evaluation, labour relations, and employee engagement);Participating in special projects and process re-engineering.Qualifications Required:I. EDUCATION:Undergraduate degree in a related field (e.g. Law, Psychology, HR/Industrial Relations) or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Graduate degree preferred.II. EXPERIENCE:Minimum five (5) years' experience in human resources. Demonstrated experience with investigations and case management, preferably in a University environment. Experience in policy interpretation. Expert understanding of labour legislation and other employment law, including the Ontario Human Rights Code and Occupational Health and Safety Act. Experience working with diverse populations including demonstrated effective consultation skills with designated groups. Experience with labour relations, organizational change, attendance management, performance management and salary administration. Sound knowledge of human resources best practices and familiarity with public sector employment.III. SKILLS:Computer experience including word processing, spreadsheet applications, database management, SharePoint, and scheduling software (e.g, Outlook). Internet research skills required. An understanding of SAP (HRIS) strongly preferred. Familiarity with case management software an asset.IV. OTHER:Excellent oral and written communication, interpersonal and organizational skills. Excellent analytical skills. Ability to exercise tact, independent judgement and discretion. Ability to handle sensitive client interactions effectively and with professionalism. Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and to handle sensitive information in an appropriate manner. Ability to understand and synthesize information and statistics. Demonstrated ability to prioritize a fluctuating workload, under pressure, and to meet deadlines. Accuracy and attention to detail essential.
