The Compliance Officer ensures that all operations within the cold storage facility adhere to regulatory standards, industry guidelines, and client requirements. Reporting directly to the General Manager, this role is responsible for implementing and maintaining compliance programs related to PPECB, SAGAP, SOLAS, HACCP, DALRRD and HSSE standards. The Compliance Officer plays a critical role in maintaining certifications, ensuring legal compliance, and fostering a safe and efficient working environment.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Regulatory Compliance: Monitor and ensure adherence to the requirements of relevant regulatory bodies, including:PPECB (Perishable Products Export Control Board) standards.SAGAP (South African Good Agricultural Practices).SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) regulations related to container weight verification.FDA (Food and Drug Administration) regulations for export to the U.S.DALRRD (Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development) compliance for agricultural exports.Food Safety and Quality Standards: Implement and maintain HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) systems to manage food safety risks.Conduct regular audits to ensure compliance with internal and external quality standards.Train staff on food safety protocols and ensure proper documentation is maintained.Certifications and Audits: Manage the facility's certification processes, ensuring readiness for internal and external audits.Maintain up-to-date records and documentation for compliance programs.Liaise with auditors, regulatory bodies, and certification agencies as required.Policy Development and Implementation: Draft, review, and update compliance policies and procedures to align with regulatory changes.Communicate changes in compliance requirements to staff and management.Work closely with the Operations Manager and Planning Manager to integrate compliance into daily workflows and drive continuous improvement.Training and Awareness: Develop and deliver training programs to ensure all staff are aware of compliance requirements and protocols.Promote a culture of compliance and continuous improvement across the organization.WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR: Educational Requirements: Qualification in Compliance, Quality Management, Food Science, Environmental Health, or a related field.Professional certifications in compliance or quality management (e.g., HACCP, FSSC 22000, ISO 22000, ISO 45001, NEBOSH, or equivalent) are advantageous.Experience: 5+ years in a compliance role, preferably in a fruit cold storage, agricultural export, or perishable logistics environment.Proven experience with HACCP implementation and audits.Familiarity with South African export regulations and international standards (e.g., SAGAP, SOLAS).Skills: Strong knowledge of regulatory frameworks (SAGAP, SOLAS, DALRRD, HACCP, and HSSE), with a passion for promoting a workplace safety and food safety culture.Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills.Effective communication and interpersonal skills to liaise with internal teams, clients, and regulatory bodies.Ability to work independently.Attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.Proficiency in compliance management software and Microsoft Office Suite.
