About us: The University Registrar's Office (URO) is a central support team that provides institutional leadership on student financial aid & awards, student accounts, client services & records, student systems and learning space management (LSM) and convocation. The URO works with faculty and divisional registrars to support undergraduate and graduate students throughout the student life cycle and is an advocate and service provider for University of Toronto students and tri-campus registrarial services.
The Learning Space Management (LSM) team has a focus on learning space excellence with stewardship of the University's central classrooms and testing space. The team provides leadership on academic scheduling, classroom design, instructional technology and accommodated testing. This holistic perspective allows each member of the team to work together, share experiences and better understand how their decisions and deliverables impact other team members and results.
Your opportunity: With a thorough understanding of architectural principles and design as they relate to classroom environments, and under the direction of the Manager of Classroom Planning and Technology Services, this position is responsible for all aspects of the design, development, maintenance, and application of classroom standards at the University of Toronto. These standards cover every aspect of instructional activity in classrooms, including environmental factors, furnishings, and instructional technology. The incumbent utilizes architectural principles and trends, planning and zoning by-laws, standards, legislation, and building codes relevant to university facilities and capital projects. The primary responsibility is to ensure that the university's teaching and instructional facilities are consistently operational and well-supported across the institution.
You will fulfill this role by engaging extensively with all stakeholders involved in classroom design and development. You will evaluate and develop strategies to ensure that current classroom inventories meet established standards, design layouts for classroom and instructional spaces, and create a website to broadly communicate these standards. Additionally, you will play a crucial role in specifying and implementing classroom improvement projects on the downtown campus.
The Classroom Planning and Design Specialist is crucial in designing classrooms. This role involves conducting utilization studies, analyzing inventory usage and planned enrollments, and assessing user needs. You will incorporate ergonomic and accessibility requirements, design parameters, and project-specific criteria. Additionally, research is conducted on emerging trends and future styles of academic environments to determine their applicability to the University.
Your responsibilities will include: Liaising with all stakeholders to ensure budget, deadlines, standards, and scope are met; Consulting with clients regarding the development of project scope and resourcesDefining requirements and scope of complex projects with broad impact and long-term consequencesDeveloping project schedules including milestones, critical path, timelines, deliverables and reportingReviewing technical design documents prior to revisionPreparing detailed analysis on all aspects and phases of construction projects from conception to completionAnalyzing and recommending changes to consultant fees; Assessing needs and determining if consultants/contractors are required for project work; Compiling design drawings and specifications for public tendersEnsuring compliance with building codes that would affect the certification or status of the University or a facilityPlanning and controlling expenditures on many accounts for construction projects; Performing complex financial data modeling and analysisEssential Qualifications: Advanced College Diploma (3 years) in Architecture /Design or equivalent combination of experience and education requiredMinimum eight (8) years related experience managing capital projects, including large and small scale renovations – specifically in a post-secondary environmentExperience in space planning & designThorough understanding of classroom design, best practices and trendsStrong computer skills, including Microsoft Word and Excel, and advanced proficiency in AutoCADDemonstrated experience with Adobe Suite software – Photoshop, IllustratorExcellent written skills of reports and technical documentsSuperior communication, interpersonal, organizational and problem-solving skillsAbility to work independently and with tight deadlinesAssets (Nonessential): Project Management certification an assetTo be successful in this role you will be: AdaptableApproachableOrganizedResponsibleClosing Date: 09/30/2024, 11:59PM ET
