Job Description
Technical
Analyzing all analytical samples for specific analysis using the correct procedures and/or methods. Instruments of interest are XRD, XRF, OES and LECO.
Monitoring technical accuracy of results and taking remedial action when necessary; recording data (Evaluation of analytical results).
Updating internal findings, improvement requests, and keeping minutes of internal meetings.
Generating reports detailing analytical results, which may include opinions and interpretations.
Verifying instruments.
Assisting with the maintenance of instruments and apparatus.
Having workable knowledge to calibrate and perform minor maintenance of laboratory and preparation equipment.
Early identification of biases and QC issues and immediate communication of these to the Section Manager.
Diagnosing all suspect results and assisting in rectifying the problem, whether it is equipment or analytical.
Administration
Calculating test results as per standard format and/or procedures.
Reporting results within the specified time frame.
Reporting any apparatus or equipment that is not functioning correctly to the Section Manager.
Transferring data from the instrument to LIMS.
Ensuring all analytical data and calculations are traceable and stored in the relevant files for that purpose or LIMS.
Recording and filing all equipment records for Quality purposes.
Disposing of samples.
Verifying test results against control samples and charts.
Re-analyzing samples when control results are not within the control chart limits.
General
Troubleshooting lab technical problems.
Calibration of lab equipment (XRD, XRF, OES, LECO, etc.).
Daily trends analysis: Monitoring technical accuracy of results and taking remedial action when necessary.
Reporting (Shipments/Specials/Closing of samples out of MES Spec).
Managing non-routine samples.
Engaging in continual improvement initiatives and improvement requests.
Identifying biases and QC issues.
Diagnosing all suspect results and assisting in rectifying the problem, whether it is equipment or analytical.
Overseeing lab housekeeping.
Ensuring compliance with quality procedures and the Laboratory Health and Safety Act.
Willingness to work shifts and overtime when necessary.
Assisting on any lower or above level when necessary.
Adhering to all quality and safety requirements of the SGS management system.
Performing any other reasonable tasks as assigned by the direct line manager.
Supervising
Supervisor skills and computer literacy would be advantageous.
Assisting with the training on new methods and/or procedures.
Controlling timekeeping on the shift.
Planning leave to minimize overtime.
Checking daily staff attendance and addressing any problems timely and proactively.
Ensuring sufficient staff members are on shift.
Shift takeovers will only take place in the Laboratory building.

Qualifications
Education and Experience
Minimum BSc or National Diploma in Chemistry.
At least 5 years of laboratory experience.
Computer literate in LIMS, Word, and Excel.
