In South Africa, we supported 779 beneficiaries in 2021 to gain $24.9 million (R396m) in increased revenue and wages. A large proportion of the beneficiaries were SMMEs, with 43% being women or women-owned businesses.
Program Background
TechnoServe delivers an Enterprise and Supplier Development program at the client's operations, supporting local enterprises to grow their businesses. This initiative drives broader development across sectors like mining, agriculture, tourism, and retail. In the first four years, the initiative supported 10,000 jobs across 8 locations.
We are currently seeking a qualified start-up enterprise development Business Advisor to lead training, coaching, and mentorship for start-up businesses in the program's operational areas.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategy development and project management:
Work with Hub Managers to develop/refine start-up business strategy for the hub.
Manage all elements of delivering the ED0 program, including:
Marketing the program
Developing/refining selection criteria
Facilitating beneficiary selection process
Providing training and mentorship to beneficiaries
Diagnosing individual needs of start-up businesses
Monitoring and tracking progress of businesses
Demand side initiatives and partnerships:
Develop and facilitate training topics/workshops for beneficiary companies.
Provide personalized business advice in key areas (marketing, finances, operations).
Support the formalization of businesses to ensure legal compliance.
Assist with access to start-up funding and business support for qualifying beneficiaries.
Organize business networking interventions and facilitate entry into pitching competitions.
Collect baseline information for monitoring and evaluation of the Program.
Monitoring and evaluation:
Report on the performance of the ED0 pillar on all key metrics.
Incorporate learnings from each wave to improve offerings continuously.
Perform other duties assigned by the supervisor.
REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's degree in business administration, economics, marketing, or related discipline.
At least 2 OR 4 years of experience in the private sector and/or development spheres.
Experience in Small Business Development.
Excellent oral and written communication skills (in English and local language).
Strong organizational skills and knowledge of the South African economic context.
Outstanding interpersonal skills in a multi-cultural environment.
Ability to work independently and as part of a global team.
Current/past work/living in target geography preferred.
Strong commitment to economic development.
Experience with e-learning platforms (Desirable).
Valid driving license.
