Description

Breath Alcohol Technicians play a vital role in the Forensic Laboratory by installing and performingmaintenance and performance checks of electronic breath alcohol testing equipment used in DUI cases. Work isdone both in the field and in a laboratory setting. The technician will be assigned to a set, service areathroughout Kentucky. Breath Alcohol Technicians are also expected to testify to the results of their work incourt and other legal proceedings.

The training program will include electronic repairs of portable and stationary breath testing equipment,basic laboratory safety, and providing testimony in legal proceedings.

Key Responsibilities:Installs, maintains and repairs breath alcohol testing instruments at testing locations throughout adesignated service area.Conducts tests of electronic breath alcohol testing systems and measuring devices to regularly monitorand evaluate performance and accuracyConducts on-site instrumental exams and certifies repairs.Evaluates overall instrument programs performance and reports overall instrument performance status andtrends.Produces and maintains records of repair work made on electronic breath alcohol instruments as well asmaintaining a monthly preventative maintenance schedule for instruments in assigned areas.Testifies in local and state courts as to instrument performance and services records.Attends training courses and programs providing specialized education in electronic repair, service andmaintenance of breath alcohol instrumentation and testing equipment.Preferred Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:Attention to detail.Strong written and verbal communication.Ability to multi-task.Strong problem solver.If you are interested in a challenging yet rewarding career as a Kentucky State Police Breath AlcoholTechnician where you can make a positive difference in your local community we would love to review yourapplication.
EDUCATION: High school graduate supplemented by six months of technical training in electronics.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: NONE
Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: NONE
Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Experience in the installation, maintenance and operation of electronic equipment will substitute for the six months of technical training in electronics on a month-for-month basis.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must possess a valid driver's license prior to employment in this job classification. Must complete certified factory training of approved evidential breath-alcohol testing instrumentation within 6 months of employment in this job classification. Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s) or other credentials.
Working Conditions
Work is typically performed in a laboratory, a breath field site and in a court setting. Frequent travel is required.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
