Research Unit in Bioinformatics (RUBi) in the Department of Biochemistry, Microbiology and Bioinformatics
The Research Unit in Bioinformatics (RUBi) invites suitably qualified candidates to join their team.
Main Objectives
Research is the main focus, and teaching is not a core function. Where the researchers are on contract, raising funds for their employment, contract research shall be regarded as equivalent to more traditional forms of research. In assessing the candidate's scholarship for promotion, consideration will be given to the individual's track record. While disciplinary differences are considered, the candidate must demonstrate a standing within the discipline based on their research and student research. This could mean that the individual has demonstrated leadership, made a major contribution to research projects, and been the lead author on publications or has demonstrated a consistent individual contribution in several publications throughout their academic career.
The Requirements
At least a PhD in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology or Computer Science, or another cognate discipline and exposure to structural bioinformatics.
Assist with the supervision of postgraduate students.
Writing of research articles.
Experience working with sequence data relevant to human pathogens and/or experience in network analysis as part of graph theory and/or tool development is highly advantageous.
A strong understanding of the Python programming language and Typescript.
Experience with Javascript component libraries (knowledge of either ReactJS or KnockoutJS).
An ability to build and construct APIs (such as REST and/or GraphQL) to incorporate data from Backend services into the Frontend.
Familiarity with backend frameworks such as Django, Flask, and/or Express.
Experience with Git and other version control systems.
Experience with application containerization (Docker/Kubernetes).
An ability to manage relational database systems (such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, MS SQL Server, etc).
Experience with working with web servers (such as Apache and Nginx).
Good algorithmic, analytical, and problem-solving abilities, including retaining these skills in high-pressure situations.
Capacity for independent learning of new skills as they are required.
Some administrative experience, albeit in informal contexts, e.g., student or sports clubs, work experiences.

The selection process that will be followed for this post will include an assessment and/or presentation and an interview.

Remuneration per annum (Grade R):
Basic Pensionable Salary per annum: R457 874.52
Cost to Company per annum (Approximately): R460 000.00
