The Faculty of Natural Sciences at the University of the Western Cape is internationally recognised for its excellence in teaching and research. The Faculty comprises nine academic departments, a School of Pharmacy and a number of world-class research institutes and Centres. The Faculty offers undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in the major scientific disciplines and a professional degree in Pharmacy.
The Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics is seeking to employ an experienced academic at the rank of Professor or Associate Professor in Applied Mathematics, specifically in the areas of Mathematical Biology and/or Computational Finance. The Department plays a vital role in a research-intensive university, focusing on both Pure and Applied Mathematics research, as well as teaching mathematics in the Faculty of Natural Sciences and providing undergraduate service courses throughout the university. The ideal candidate is expected to bring significant experience, expertise, and enthusiasm to this role.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the following key responsibility areas: Facilitate learning and teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in Mathematics and Applied Mathematics.Conduct research and publish in Applied Mathematics, particularly in Mathematical Biology and/or Computational Finance.Undertake undergraduate and postgraduate supervision.Provide academic leadership and administration.Undertake curriculum development and assessment.Undertake community engagement and outreach.Minimum Requirements – Professor: PhD or equivalent, in the field of Mathematics or Applied Mathematics.A record of quality peer-reviewed publications in the field of Mathematical Biology and/or Computational Finance.A record of successful supervision of PhD students.Evidence of expertise, national standing, and definite international presence in his/her discipline.Minimum Requirements - Associate Professor: PhD or equivalent, in the field of Mathematics or Applied Mathematics.Demonstrated experience in facilitating learning and teaching, in the field of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, specifically in Mathematical Biology and/or Computational Finance.A record of quality peer-reviewed publications in Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, in the field of Mathematical Biology and/or Computational Finance.A record of successful postgraduate supervision.Evidence of expertise, national standing, and definite international presence in his/her discipline.Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.Presentation and facilitation skills.Adaptability and the ability to operate in a diverse environment.Student-focused approach.Coaching and mentoring skills.Planning and organising skills.Technical professional knowledge and skills in the discipline and in the core strategic areas, namely learning and teaching, research and scholarship, community engagement as well as professional leadership.In your application, you are encouraged to highlight your strengths and include anything else you deem exceptional and outstanding to be considered by the selection panel.
