Job Category: Faculty - Tenure Stream (continuing)
Faculty/Division: Faculty of Arts & Science
Department: Dept of Classics
Campus: St. George (Downtown Toronto)
Description: The Department of Classics in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for two full-time tenure stream positions in the general area of Ancient Greek Literature. The field is otherwise completely open, except that we hope to make one appointment in Archaic literature. Up to two appointments may be made at the rank of Associate Professor with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2025.
Candidates must have earned a PhD degree in Classics or a related area, with a clearly demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. Applicants should address in their cover letter how they would complement and add value to existing Departmental strengths. The successful candidate will have a program of rigorous and innovative research at the highest international level backed by a track record commensurate with their career stage, and will have presented clear evidence of an excellent teaching record. They will have the demonstrated capacity successfully to teach, at all undergraduate levels, translation-based courses in ancient Greek literature, and language courses in ancient Greek. They must also have expertise in at least one other ancient language. They will demonstrate excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills in their application materials, and a commitment to improving equity, diversity and inclusion within the subject.
Evidence of excellence in research may be demonstrated by a record of relevant, peer-reviewed publications with major presses and field-leading journals, by invited presentations, by grants and awards commensurate with career stage, by a research statement showing ambition and innovation, and by strong recommendations from referees of high standing.
Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through teaching accomplishments, strong letters of reference, and a teaching dossier submitted as part of the application (with required materials outlined below).
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Equity, diversity and inclusion are essential to academic excellence as articulated in University of Toronto's Statement on Equity, Diversity and Excellence. We seek candidates who share these values and who demonstrate throughout the application materials their commitment and efforts to advance equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment.
Located in vibrant downtown Toronto, the Department of Classics is one of the largest and most diverse in North America. Committed to a capacious and pluralistic understanding of Classics, the Department encompasses all aspects of and approaches to Greco-Roman antiquity and is recognized for its excellence across the full chronological and methodological scope of the field.
All qualified candidates are invited to apply online by clicking on the link below. Applicants must submit a cover letter, a current curriculum vitae, a short research statement outlining current and future research plans, a recent publication, a teaching dossier including a statement of teaching philosophy, sample course materials, and teaching evaluations.
Applicants must provide the name and contact information of three references. At least one reference must address the candidate's teaching in detail. The University of Toronto's recruiting tool will automatically solicit and collect letters of reference from each referee the day after an application is submitted. Applicants remain responsible for ensuring that references submit recent letters – which must be on institutional letterhead, dated and signed – by the closing date.
All application materials, including recent reference letters, must be received by October 17, 2024.
All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.
