The University of the Western Cape (UWC) enjoys national and international acclaim for its continuing contribution to democratic change in South Africa and for making quality education accessible to all South Africans and developing centres of excellence of national importance. The Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes that educate students across multiple disciplines. The Department of Political Studies, based in the EMS Faculty, has a reputation as an innovative teaching and research department in South Africa and the region. The Political Studies programme is currently conceptualized into four sub-disciplines: Political Philosophy/Theory; International Relations and International Political Economy; South African Politics and Comparative Politics. The department also has a strong focus on research methodology.
The Political Studies Department currently has two vacancies at the Associate lectureship level. The successful candidates will join a dynamic and supportive Faculty dedicated to teaching and research, as well as to overall student development. The candidates' academic records must be excellent and must reflect the potential to become established as a teacher and researcher of good standing in Political Studies. The ideal candidates will be highly motivated and willing to make a significant contribution to the development of the Faculty and the Political Studies Department.
The successful candidates for Associate Lecturer in the Political Studies Department will be responsible for the following key performance areas: Teaching in the department at undergraduate level. Administration relating to subject tuition. Contributing to the functioning of the Department as appropriate. Development of a research agenda. Minimum Requirements: An NQF level 8 qualification in the field of Political Studies. Added advantages: A Masters qualification in the field of Political Studies. Teaching experience in the field of Political Studies. Experience of working with tutors in a university setting. An interest in one of the following fields: Introductory Politics, Political Theory, South African Politics, Comparative Politics or Research Methodology. Key competencies: Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English. Presentation, teaching and facilitation skills. Adaptability and the ability to operate in a diverse environment.
