The Assistant Urban Planner at the V&A Waterfront will support the planning and development team by assisting with various tasks related to development applications, report production, and presentation preparation. Key responsibilities include compiling information for development applications, managing administrative tasks, and producing maps, plans, and graphics for planning reports. The Assistant Urban Planner will also conduct research, assist in report writing, and help prepare presentations, ensuring accurate and timely delivery of planning documents to project teams and consultants. This role is integral in supporting the smooth operation and execution of development projects within the V&A Waterfront.
Job Objectives:
Assist with Compiling Information for Development Applications
Support the preparation and submission of development applications by gathering, organizing, and verifying relevant data and documents.
Accurate and comprehensive data collected for each development application.
Well-organized documentation packages prepared in accordance with submission guidelines.
Timely delivery of all required information to senior planners or project managers.
Provide Administrative Support for Development Applications
Ensure that all administrative tasks related to development applications are completed efficiently and accurately.
Application files are maintained and updated regularly.
All necessary forms and documentation are completed and filed on time.
Efficient tracking of application progress and deadlines.
Assist with the Production of Maps, Plans, and Graphics
Create visual materials to support planning reports, presentations, and communication with project teams and consultants.
Professionally produced maps, plans, and graphics integrated into planning reports and presentations.
Visual materials that clearly convey planning concepts and proposals to stakeholders.
Assist with Report Production
Contribute to the creation of planning reports by supporting the compilation, writing, and formatting processes.
Draft sections of planning reports produced in a clear, concise, and accurate manner.
Reports are well-organized and adhere to established formats and guidelines.
Timely submission of draft reports to senior planners for review.
Assist with Preparation of Presentations
Support the development of presentations for internal and external stakeholders by assisting with content creation and design.
Presentation slides that effectively communicate planning information and proposals.
Accurate incorporation of data, maps, and graphics into presentations.
Timely preparation of presentation materials for meetings and stakeholder engagements.
Conduct Research to Support Planning Activities
Undertake research tasks to gather relevant information that supports planning decisions and strategies.
Assist in research and review of local and provincial planning legislation, policies, development plans and frameworks.
Assist with monitoring and review of planning and development issues impacting on V&A.
Assist in drafting reports and position statements on planning issues, policies, and City spatial plans.
Assist with monitoring and reviewing planning applications in the City of Cape Town relevant to development of the Waterfront.
Assist with monitoring and reporting on socio-economic issues and the legislative framework affecting development projects.
Qualification(s)
The following educational requirements are relevant to this job:
Postgraduate Urban and Regional Planning Degree
SA Council of Planners (SACPLAN) – accredited qualification at an NQF Level 7
Eligible for registration with SACPLAN as a Candidate Planner
The following knowledge requirements are relevant to this job:
Town Planning Legislation and Procedures
'Package of Plans' planning approval system
Environmental and Heritage Legislation
Local and Provincial Government Development Policies and Frameworks
Urban development and planning principles and issues, and implementation thereof
Reading and interpreting plans and drawings related to own and related professions
Working knowledge of graphic and map work
The following skills requirements are relevant to this job:
Able to use GIS as a tool for mapping and presentation
Proficient in MS Excel, Outlook, Word and PowerPoint
Ability to work independently and in a team environment
Good attention to detail
Able to produce maps and plans at different scales
