ENVIRONMENT AND HEALTH RESEARCH UNIT (DURBAN/CAPE TOWN/JOHANNESBURG/PRETORIA) The South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) strives to improve the nation's health and quality of life by funding and conducting relevant and leading health research. Senior Scientist (S) Duration: 3-year Contract The South African Medical Research Council, Environment and Health Research Unit (EHRU) requires a suitably qualified and experienced Senior Scientist (Seasoned). This position aligns with two large projects being carried out by the Climate Change and Human Health Programme team, focusing on climate change, air pollution, and health. Specific skills required include scientific writing, preparing journal publications, temperature and air pollution data analysis and interpretation, and knowledge and experience in the analysis of big data using specialist skills and methods such as Distributed Lag Non-Linear Modeling (DLNM).
To cover the multifaceted aspects of the post, we require an energetic person with a strong theoretical and practical background/experience in environmental health.
Responsibilities: To write and publish academic articles. To carry out statistical analyses like DLNM. To manage research projects and teams working on research projects. To support training and capacity strengthening of staff and students in the unit. To contribute to research translation outputs such as policy briefs and media. To support research programme and unit internal activities. Core Requirements: Master's degree in environmental health or relevant qualification. 2 years working experience of environmental health issues within a research institute or related environment. 2 years project management experience within environmental health. At least one 1st author ISI peer-reviewed journal article published. At least one 1st author publication. PI on a proposal or managing research, staff, and budget for a project. Ability to write academic articles. Ability to provide research support including liaising with other stakeholders. Advantageous: PhD in environmental health/public health. 2 years in a research environment, research field work, data analysis, data collection, report, and article writing. Driver's license.
