My client, a Private Hospital is looking to permanently employ professional nurses specializing in Hematology/Oncology (Hem/Onc) & who has specialized knowledge and skills to care for patients with blood disorders and cancer.
Below are the primary roles and responsibilities: Clinical Care Assessment and Monitoring : Assess patients' physical, psychological, and social needs.
Monitor vital signs, lab results, and symptoms related to hematologic/oncologic conditions.
Perform ongoing assessments to detect complications like infection, bleeding, or adverse reactions to treatment.
Treatment Administration : Administer chemotherapy, immunotherapy, blood products, and other medications according to established protocols.
Ensure the safe handling and disposal of hazardous drugs.
Manage central venous access devices (CVADs) and perform other specialized procedures (e.g., bone marrow biopsies).
Symptom Management : Implement interventions for symptom control, including pain, nausea, fatigue, and side effects of chemotherapy/radiation.
Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team for palliative care or hospice services when needed.
Patient and Family Education Treatment and Disease Education : Educate patients and families about diagnosis, treatment plans, potential side effects, and prognosis.
Provide guidance on self-care, medication adherence, and lifestyle modifications.
Support and Counseling : Offer emotional support to patients and families dealing with the stress and impact of cancer diagnosis and treatment.
Facilitate communication between patients, families, and the healthcare team.
Coordination and Collaboration Multidisciplinary Collaboration : Collaborate with oncologists, hematologists, pharmacists, social workers, and other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive care.
Participate in tumor boards and case conferences to discuss patient progress and treatment plans.
Care Coordination : Coordinate appointments, treatments, and follow-up care to provide continuity.
Arrange referrals to other specialists (e.g., radiation oncology, surgery) and support services (e.g., nutrition, counseling).
Documentation and Compliance Accurate Documentation : Maintain accurate and up-to-date records, including patient assessments, treatment administration, and progress notes.
Adhere to clinical protocols, policies, and regulatory standards to ensure quality and safety in care delivery.
Quality Improvement : Participate in quality improvement initiatives and research to enhance patient outcomes.
Stay updated with the latest evidence-based practices and advancements in hematology and oncology nursing.
Professional Development Education and Training : Pursue continuing education opportunities to stay current on emerging treatments, technologies, and best practices.
Obtain certifications like OCN (Oncology Certified Nurse) or CHPN (Certified Hematology/Oncology Nurse) to demonstrate expertise.
Leadership and Advocacy : Act as a patient advocate, ensuring patients receive compassionate and culturally sensitive care.
Take leadership roles in unit-based or institutional initiatives, such as mentoring new nurses or participating in policy development.
Education: Diploma or Degree in Nursing SANC registered as a Professional Nurse Diploma in Oncology or Hematology will be an added advantage.
