Junior Health and Safety Officer
We are seeking a proactive Junior Health and Safety Officer to join our team. This role will be key in ensuring that all health and safety standards are adhered to on-site, particularly around electrical infrastructure. This position is ideal for a motivated individual with experience in health and safety on construction sites who is passionate about creating a safe work environment and possesses knowledge of electrical hazards.
Key Responsibilities:
Health and Safety Inspections and Audits
Conduct daily inspections of the construction site to ensure adherence to health and safety protocols.
Identify hazards related to electrical works, including LV and MV installations.
Support regular safety audits and verify compliance with safety procedures.
Risk Assessment and Hazard Identification
Assist in risk assessment and management, focusing on electrical installations and live work.
Review and prepare Job Safety Analyses (JSAs) and Risk Assessment documents.
Update site-specific risk assessments based on work progress and emerging hazards.
Safety Inductions and Training
Conduct site inductions for new workers and subcontractors, emphasizing electrical safety and emergency procedures.
Ensure proper training for workers on safe practices related to electrical installations.
PPE Compliance and Safety Gear Checks
Verify the correct use of PPE, including insulated gloves, eye protection, and flame-resistant clothing.
Perform regular PPE checks and report deficiencies.
Monitoring and Reporting of Safety Incidents
Report incidents, near-misses, or accidents to the Group Health and Safety Officer.
Assist in investigating accidents, gathering evidence, and preparing incident reports.
Safety Meetings and Toolbox Talks
Organize and participate in regular safety meetings focused on electrical work hazards.
Emphasize lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures for electrical equipment.
Regulatory Compliance and Documentation
Ensure compliance with the OHS Act, SANS, and relevant industry regulations.
Maintain safety inspection, audit, and incident report records.
Emergency Preparedness and Response
Assist in developing emergency response plans for electrical hazards.
Ensure emergency response equipment is available and maintained.
Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Monitoring
Monitor compliance with environmental and safety regulations.
Oversee safe disposal of hazardous materials and monitor the environmental impact.
Liaison and Coordination
Serve as a liaison between the site team, workers, subcontractors, and the Group Health and Safety Officer.
Coordinate with external safety auditors and inspectors.
Safety Signage and Site Safety Standards
Ensure proper display of safety signage around the site, particularly around electrical work zones.
Requirements:
Minimum of a National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety (OHS), Electrical Engineering, or related field.
(SACPCMP registration as Candidate CHSO is preferred)
Experience: 1-2 years in health and safety on construction sites, ideally in electrical infrastructure. Experience with LV/MV networks is advantageous.
Skills:
Strong report writing and incident investigation skills.
Knowledge of electrical hazards and safety standards.
Ability to identify hazards, assess risks, and implement controls.
Effective communication skills for conducting training and meetings.
Attention to detail with a proactive approach to safety.
