THE BANK: Established in 1964, the African Development Bank (AfDB) is the premier pan-African development institution, promoting economic growth and social progress across the continent. To sharply focus the objectives of the Ten-Year Strategy (2024 – 2033) and ensure greater developmental impact, five major areas (High 5s) have been identified for scaling up: energy, agro-business, industrialization, integration, and improving the quality of life for the people of Africa.

The Bank is seeking to recruit a dynamic and competent Principal Investment Officer who will work on agriculture and rural finance transactions within the Vice Presidency for 'Agriculture, Human, and Social Development' (AHVP), specifically in the Agriculture and Rural Finance Department (AHFR).

THE COMPLEX: The Vice Presidency for 'Agriculture, Human, and Social Development' focuses on the Bank's High 5s priorities of "Feed Africa" and "Improve Quality of Life for the People of Africa". The Complex objectives are to develop policy and strategy, provide deep sector expertise, develop new financing instruments, and represent the Bank with external stakeholders.

THE HIRING DEPARTMENT / DIVISION: The Agriculture Finance and Rural Development Department works closely with the Agriculture and Agro-Industry Department and Regional Directorates to support the delivery of "Feed Africa: Strategy for Agricultural Transformation in Africa".

The Department focuses on the following deliverables:

Finance, scale, and catalyze capital flows of commercial lending and private investment into agribusinesses. Accelerate agriculture transformation through private sector actors. Design, finance, and promote Public-Private Partnerships and private sector-led Special Agro-industrial Processing Zones (SAPZ). Design and support disaster risk financing structures to mitigate the financial impact of natural disasters and climate-related events on vulnerable populations in Africa. Support Agri-small medium enterprise (SME) financing through catalytic mechanisms. Catalyze and support capital flows to scale SMEs. THE POSITION: The Chief Investment Officer will originate, develop, lead the due diligence up to Board Directors approval, financial closure, and first disbursement of private sector transactions in the agribusiness and rural finance space. The position will be based in Pretoria, South Africa.

KEY FUNCTIONS: Under the direct supervision of the Division Manager – Agriculture and Rural Finance, the Chief Investment Officer will be responsible for the following:

Project Development and Processing Design Specific Innovative Transactions, Projects and Initiatives External Liaison and Knowledge Sharing Policy and Project Evaluation Strategy, Planning and Reporting COMPETENCIES (skills, experience and knowledge):

A Master's degree in Business Administration, Finance or relevant field; CFA charter holder is a plus. Ability for business development, structure and negotiate deals. Strong analytical and financial structuring skills. Experience in multinational organization in Africa. Strong client relationship skills. Knowledge of economic developments and market trends in Africa. Excellent organizational and time management skills. Willingness to travel extensively. Excellent presentation skills. Ability to communicate effectively in French or English. Competence in Microsoft Office applications.
