The Community Engagement Unit (CEU) resides within the Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Academic portfolio at the University of the Western Cape. The mandate of the CEU is to promote and strengthen the University's academic endeavours through the Scholarship of Engagement. It acknowledges the vital role and obligation of universities in the improvement of civil society and the development of human capital, through the integrated three-fold academic project of Learning & Teaching, Research, and Community Engagement. The significance of involving society and effectively cultivating a scholarship of engagement that covers and promotes the growth of graduate attributes is reflected in UWC's history and values. The CEU is responsible for overseeing and organising Community Engagement, which is considered one of the three core responsibilities of higher education, alongside Teaching and Research. The mission of the CEU is to facilitate community engagement opportunities that foster and enhance e the scholarship of engagement through equitable partnership and citizenry to promote sustainable communities. We aspire to be a leading partner in the development of citizenry through equitable and sustainable collaborations, reflecting an engaged unit within UWC. The CEU's approach to community engagement emphasises critical engagement, partnerships, civic responsibility, social justice, equity, and lifelong learning. It acknowledges cultural contexts and diversity, fosters sustainable partnerships, and promotes critical citizenship and civic responsibility. It also acknowledges the unique strengths of each partner in enhancing community engagement scholarship. We adhere to an adaptive version of Boyer's (2008) scholarship of engagement model which refers to community engagement as a process that involves an evolution and transformation of knowledge as opposed to the simple transfer of information from one learning partner to another. The SoE framework facilitates the institutionalisation of Community Engagement (CE) in Learning and Teaching, and Research. It uses an evidence-based approach that is quality assured and measurable. The framework is flexible enough to incorporate academic freedom and disciplinary specific discourses, while aligning with the university's vision, mission, strategic objectives, and core responsibilities as mandated by legislation.
